XL6009 Boost Converter: Get a Higher Voltage from a Lower Supply
Sometimes your power source doesn’t give enough voltage for your project. For example, you might have an 18650 battery (3.7V) but need 12V for an LED strip. The XL6009 boost converter solves this. It’s a DC-DC step-up module that takes a low input voltage and boosts it to a higher, adjustable output.
Turn the multi-turn potentiometer while you watch a multimeter to set any output from 5V to 35V. The XL6009 is a high-efficiency switching regulator, so it wastes much less energy as heat than a linear regulator. Batteries last longer and the module stays cooler.
With solid-state capacitors and a thick copper PCB, this adjustable boost converter is built for reliable everyday use in battery packs, solar systems, robotics and DIY power supplies.
Key Features
- Step-up (boost) conversion. The output voltage is always higher than the input.
- Wide input range: 3V – 32V DC.
- Adjustable output: 5V – 35V DC.
- Up to 3A output current (lower at higher boost ratios; see the power guide below).
- High efficiency switching design. Less heat and longer battery life.
- Multi-turn precision potentiometer. Accurate voltage setting.
- Solid-state capacitors for durability and low ripple.
- Thick 36µm copper PCB. Better heat dissipation.
- Compact size. Easy to fit into projects.

How to Set the Output Voltage
- Connect your power source to IN+ and IN−. Check the polarity carefully.
- Connect a multimeter to OUT+ and OUT−, with nothing else connected.
- Use a small screwdriver to turn the brass screw on the blue potentiometer while you watch the multimeter.
- Stop when you reach your target voltage.
- Disconnect the multimeter and connect your device.
Tip: the multi-turn potentiometer may need 10 or more turns before the voltage starts to change. Keep turning gently.
Power Guide: How Much Current Can I Get?
A boost converter can’t create extra power. When the voltage goes up, the available current goes down, and the input current is higher than the output current.
| Example | Input | Output | Approx. Input Current Needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18650 battery → 5V USB | 3.7V | 5V @ 1A | ~1.5A |
| 18650 battery → 12V LED | 3.7V | 12V @ 0.5A | ~1.8A |
| 12V battery → 19V laptop | 12V | 19V @ 1.5A | ~2.6A |
| 12V supply → 24V device | 12V | 24V @ 1A | ~2.2A |
Keep the input current under about 3A for reliable operation. For loads above 15W, add a heatsink or fan.
Important Tips
- The output must always be higher than the input. To lower a voltage, use a step-down (buck) module such as the LM2596.
- Check polarity before powering on. The module has no reverse polarity protection, and reversed input will destroy it.
- Set the voltage before connecting your device to avoid overvoltage damage.
- Make sure your battery or power source can supply the input current (see the table above).
- Use thicker wires for high-current loads.
